Your Vehicle Donation Will Help Feed Canadians Experiencing Homelessness Amid the Housing Crisis

A lack of affordable housing and food resources means that struggling Canadians often have to pick between shelter or food. Your car donation ensures that everyone has safe and reliable access to meals, regardless of their housing situation.

The Problem

The City of Toronto’s October 2021 Homelessness Solutions and Street Needs Assessment underscores the lack of support provided by the city during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. This, coupled with growing food and housing costs, makes escaping homelessness and food insecurity nearly impossible for vulnerable Torontonians.

78,791 people are currently on the waitlist for social housing in Toronto. 77% of those without other housing options are experiencing chronic homelessness, averaging as long as 10 MONTHS on the street.

During the first 6 months of 2021, 94 people experiencing homelessness died in the streets of Toronto; more than DOUBLING the number of deaths seen in the first six months of 2020. All having been preventable.

Working Towards a Solution

Homeless Cars has partnered with Seeds of Hope to work towards offsetting the food and housing crisis firsthand, while providing life saving food and shelter services to community members.

“Before COVID-19 we were serving 200-300 meals a week out of our St. Joseph Street Hub. Since COVID-19, we have been serving anywhere from 3,000-10,000 meals a week” says Bob Charendoff, Corporate and Donor Relations at Seeds of Hope. A minimum of a 900% increase in meals served highlights that while COVID-19 numbers are increasing with the onset of the winter months, so is the demand within the shelter system.

With the death of 7 people known to the Seeds of Hope family in a two-week time span, putting a stop to the alarming rise in street deaths is a matter close to Bob Charendoffs heart; “We are in the middle of a crisis right now. We are relying on our generous charity partners such as Homeless Cars to help support those at risk while our shelter resources are at maximum capacity. Currently we are sending meals and supplies to encampments and other shelters to try and prevent more unnecessary loss in our community”.
