Your car won’t start. Now what?

It can be very stressful finding out that your car won't start, especially if your car is older and likely nearing the end of its usable life. It may be a fairly easy-to-fix battery issue, or it could be a sign that it's time to get a new car.

Not sure where to start? Here are some suggestions for what you can do when your car won't start.

Take it to a mechanic

If your car won't start, then your first course of action will likely be to get help from a mechanic. For a newer car that's never given you much trouble, you definitely want to see if the problem can be easily fixed, as your car has plenty of years left if repaired. But, if your car is getting on in years and becoming an increasing source of aggravation for you, the services of a mechanic could end up being very costly. You should also consider the fact that your car may break down and need repairs again soon after.

Try DIY repairs

DIY repairs can be more affordable than hiring a mechanic, but you have to know what you're doing or else you could risk making the problem even worse. Even if you do have some mechanical experience and are confident you can fix the problem, you may end up investing a lot more time and money than you bargained for. A pricey, but quality mechanic may even be more affordable than DIY repairs gone wrong.

Sell or scrap it

If your car is beyond repair, then you have the option to sell it for scrap in its entirety, or take it apart yourself and sell its individual components for scrap. However, like DIY repairs, scrapping your own car can take a significant amount of time. Plus, you need to know what you are doing and which metals are worth salvaging.

Consider car donation

When you know that your car is beyond repair or when repairs would simply cost too much to be worth it, you should consider donating your car to a charity such as Homeless Cars. Homeless Cars has a very large service area including Toronto, Vaughan, Brampton, Hamilton, Mississauga, Southwestern Ontario. Homeless Cars will not only help remove your old car quickly and easily, but will also help you donate to a good cause.

At Homeless Cars we source old cars for parts, sell or scrap the car and all proceeds go to the homeless. Best of all, you will receive a tax receipt for your donation for the full value of the car. Our towing services are completely free, making donating your car as easy and convenient as possible.
