Back To School: Low Income Households and Food Insecurity

One in six or 1.4 million Canadian children were affected by food insecurity in 2021. Here’s what you can do to help.

The Problem

The Problem

Inflation has caused a noticeable rise in the cost of food. For products like fruits, vegetables, and meat, the cost has risen by as much as 7% since last year.

Low-income households in the GTA, Ottawa and Winnipeg are struggling to meet their family’s dietary needs. As a result, more middle school and high school aged students are accessing food relief services in the Kitchener-Waterloo region than last year at the same time.

How You Can Help

  1. Donate to food banks and charitable organizations that directly support children facing homelessness and food insecurity. In Toronto, North York Harvest Food Bank, Seeds of Hope, and Ve’ahavta all provide meal services for those in need. Check out our other charity partners here.

  2. Volunteering for charities in your community that run meal programs or after-school programs dedicated to supporting children in need.

  3. Support organizations like Food Banks Canada, Feed Ontario, Community Food Centers of Canada, and Ontario Dietitians in Public Health who are calling for policy reform to address the root cause of food insecurity via income-based interventions.
